Ever felt an urge to clean up Earth's natrual water sourses but not quite sure how or when? Well, boy have I got news for you! On September 25th 2010, the EPA is sponsering the annual event called the International Costal Cleanup (ICC)! It is the largest volunteer effort to to clean up Earth's marine enviornment. This event spans over 100countries and cobers all of Earth's major water sources.
Last year about hald a million people participated in this epic event. Overall they removed 7.4 million lbs, about 10.2 debis items, of debris from 6000 costal, shoreline, and underwater sites. Of all the debris found, 60% of it was classified as disposable. Included in that was over 512, 517 disposable spoons, forks and knives were found. This is enough for over 100,000 people to enjoy a picnic together.
Some event that are close to us are the New York and Washington D.C. Urban Waters/ICC events. These events will feature some special speakers, cleanup actiities, and also give you good advice on how to help cleanup your neighbor hood.
Opinion: I think it's great that we have a sucessful international costal cleanup program. It is very important to the enviornment that these coast stay clean. Its also a great way to volunteer your time and also enjoy yourself at the same time. I'm very glad that this many people have taken action and care about the enviornment enough to take their time to help keep coastal areas clean.
Questions:
1) Why is it so important that we keep our coasts clean?
2) What have you done to help the enviornment?
3)If you had the opertunity would you participate in this event?
I believe that this is a very good and responsible idea. Keeping our oceans and shores clean is extremely necessary, and it is up to us humans to do so. We're the ones responsible for the mess, so it is our job to clean it. There are many more organisms in the ocean than humans, and it's very unfair and selfish of us to destroy their habitat. If I had the change to, I would participate in this event. Our environment is imortant to me, and it should be to more people than than at present times.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most positive article yet! I knew that there was a day dedicated to cleaning the ocean, but I didn't know that there was that many people that participated. Half a million people is incredible!! The shorelines of the United States are very dirty, and if that many people help with the event the shores would look a lot better and healthier. #1. It is important to keep our shores clean because it afftects both us and the fish. #2. I have honestly not participated in anything to help the environment, but when I get older I plan on getting involved. #3. If I had time and my family or friends were going to join me, I would definitely participate in this event. I just hope that each year we have as many people or more that participate in the event!
ReplyDeleteConsidering that we are just coming off of the BP oil spill, cleaning up our oceans and coasts is an extremely important priority. Just like with endangered animals, this is our impact on nature that needs to be stopped. First of all, it is important to help clean up our oceans/coasts because it costs our government a lot of money to come in and clean up all the mess that we make. Sure if one person throws a coke in the ocean it doesn't seem like a lot but if everyone does it, it is expensive. Secondly is the obvious answer that we all look for in this blog. This garbage hurts a lot of species throughout the whole oceanic territory and the more we wait the more trash floats farther and farther out to potentially hurt more and more animals. And thirdly, would you want to be swimming next to a floating pile of coke bottles, scraps of metal, and hazardous medical supplies. My guess is not. As far as my contributions to the environment I am sorry to say this but I don't really do anything to help other than turning off lights and running faucets around the house. And also I have to be honest. I know this a little selfish but I would not go and volunteer to clean up the New Jersey coast just because its a really big schlep. Sorry, but if I lived a little bit closer I would probably go help out in my free time.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to keep our coasts clean for a few reasons. We need to be able to swim in them and be able to relax on the beach. Like Dylan said we are coming off the BP oil spill which is one of the biggest stories in the news right now. They are still trying to clean all of that up which is a total mess. I think the idea to have this day is great. The coasts can only benefit from this day and hopefully many people will show up. To help my enviroment I usually never liter. I try to keep my trash in the trash and not on the streets. I wish all my friends felt this way too. If i could attend this even I would. It sounds like a great opportunity to clean up something that needs cleaning! Like I said before we can only benefit from this day and I hope all goes well.
