Half the Amazon Rainforest to be Lost by 2030

Due to the effects of global warming and deforestation, more than half of the Amazon rainforest may be destroyed or severely damaged by the year 2030, according to a report released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

WWF’s report explains that 55% of the Amazon will be either destroyed or severely damaged within the next 20 years because of spreading suburbs, the timber industry, droughts, agriculture, fires, and livestock. Another contributor is global warming which is reducing the amount of precipitation.

Also, by 2100, global warming will reduce precipitation by 20% and increase temperatures by 4 degrees which will further increase forest fires.

Considering that the Amazon contains about half of the Earth’s rainforest, too much damage will result in a noticeable effect on the climate.

The report also predicts that the “point of no return” will be in 15-25 years, a lot sooner than originally thought.

According to a study appearing in Bioscience, the US has lost almost 4 million hectares between 1973 and 2000.

Opinion: Going along with our last discussion about cars affecting the environment, this topic is also a monumental contribution to global warming. It is critical to our future that we not only stabilize our forest population but also turn it around and increase the population.

1: What are some major logging companies that are contributing to global warming?

2. What are some major organizations that are helpful to stopping deforestation and how do they help?

3. How can south American authorities prevent too many fires?

  1. This is a crazy story. 2030 is not many years off, i'll only be 35! When "the point of no reutn" happens i'll be even younger. This is a depressing article for our future as adults. I hope all the orginizations came come together to find the one solution to all these problems. If we can do this then the outlook of our future will be much brighter. Forest fires are already an issue and if they increase because of the
increase in temperature this could affect the forests all around very much. I hope none of this happens obviously and lets hope that we will find the solution.

  2. omgeezers i did not know of this! I know I for one am against deforestation and we should start somehow reusing wod from old things made of wood we dont use any more. It need to be stopped because as mention, the point of no return is coming up in 15-25 if we do not stop what we are currently doing,. which, at this point in time does not se3em ,like its happening. As i mentioned in an earlier blog we need to start pl;anting trees of the same tuye in the spots we just cut down from so that we do not totally ruin the Earth through deforestation. This will help this issue emmenslyly. i do however have 3 more questions: 1) What is alredy being done to help this issue? 2) Once we cut down trees are we able to rehabilitate the habitat back to its original state? 3) Why can't the govbernment just make it illegal for ompanys to excesivley cut down trrees through deforestation?

  3. I also am surprised with this decrease in rainforest, and the causes. I am not surprised though that it is mainly our fault. This is definitely not the first time this has come up in these blogs. In my opinion, us humans need to stop ruining our environment! There are so many options to contribute to helping this cause, but we all just do what's easiest. The biggest problem is that the people mainly in charge of all this change won't be around in the future to witness the effects, but we will! Because of this, our generation needs to step up to the plate and make some changes.

To answer Dylan's first question about major logging companies, I found this website with a list of different types:
    http://www.manta.com/mb_34_E019B _000/logging.
Some just from Pennsylvania include Albaugh Logging, Patterson Logging CO, and King's Sawmill Inc.
More useful information may be found here also.

  4. This is not surprising to me at all. I'm actually surprised that, by 2030, the Amazon Rainforest won't be completely destroyed!! Honestly, I don't see any hope for this forest. Unless people just open up their eyes and see what's going on to this beautiful planet, I don't think the Amazon will last much longer. It's just awful that we are not only affecting nature, but we are affecting ourselves as well. Trees and plants are a huge part in many cycles on Earth including the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, and water cycle. What bothers me the most about this is that the most beautiful part of South America is being destroyed. Here is a great site I found on the deforestation of the Amazon: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/forests/amazon/logging-in-the-amazon/ This shows that 60-80% of the logging is illegal. There is a federal environmental agency, IBAMA, but it isn't doing much about all of this. #2. An organization called Greenpeace has teamed up with IBAMA to detect more illegal logging of the Amazon. I'm hoping that they can stop this problem fast.
